Speech and language therapy assessment

Initial consultation:

Following our initial phone consultation or email, I will identify what sort of assessment is required, and can then email or post a referral form, information regarding my rates, and directions to where I live. It can be useful for you to forward any relevant information to me prior to the assessment.

Initial assessment:

During the initial assessment I speak with parents/guardians in order to get a case history.

In looking at your child’s communication, I use a combination of formal (standardised) tests and informal testing through chatting, playing, using toys and books.  With younger children, I often allow time for parent and child to play together as this gives me an opportunity to see your child interacting with you.

At the end of the assessment session I will give informal feedback regarding your child’s communication skills, and we will decide from there the best course of action.

Reports:

Depending on what was agreed prior to the assessment, I provide a summary assessment report or detailed report which you will receive within three weeks.

Music Therapy assessment

A music therapy assessment uses music, voice, sound and language, in order to explore aspects of a child’s development, be it communication, thinking, emotions, behaviour, physical skills or creativity.

Following our initial phone consultation or email, I can establish what your concerns are, and/or the reasons why you would like your child to attend for music therapy. From there, I can identify the sort of assessment that is required. Sometimes a one off assessment session is sufficient, in other cases assessment needs to occur over a number of sessions.  I can then email or post a referral form, information regarding my rates, and directions to where I live. It can be useful for you to forward any relevant information to me prior to the assessment.

Combined assessment

With children who have needs across different domains of their development, or who have speech or language difficulties which are not responding to ‘conventional’ SLT approaches, I offer a combined assessment. This assessment integrates both speech and language therapy and music therapy techniques in order to establish a profile of your child.
