A recent randomised control trial based has found that music therapy is effective in reducing symptoms of depression. “Where is the evidence ?” is a question often posed to Irish music therapists, particularly in relation to mental health. Hopefully studies such as this will provide further weight to the established benefits of music therapy in mental health. It also highlights the place for a qualified music therapy practitioner in carrying out such interventions. This is a key factor which differentiates music therapy from other forms of musical interventions such as community music (which also has a valued place within mental health and other services).
